Let us know if you have a family member from the Port Royal area who served in either World War I or II and help us remember those who fought for our freedoms.

Please join us for our 18th annual “Independence Day Celebration”. Entertainment will include St. Andrew’s Legion Pipes & Drums, presentation of the colors and The Pledge of Allegiance, singing the National Anthem, delivery and reading of the Declaration of Independence, living history demonstrations by 13th Virginia Infantry, 26th Virginia Infantry, 23rd US Colored Troops, The Virginia Frontiersmen, Civil War Civilians of Spotsylvania, blacksmithing and early medical presentations, surrey rides, Fredericksburg Spinners and Weavers Guild, Native American artifact exhibit, St. Peters slide program, and special guest speakers James Madison and Francis Scott Key, portrayed by Mr. Charles Wissinger.

Three of our museums will be open: The Port Royal Museum of American History (506 Main St.), The Port Royal Museum of Medicine and The Portrait Gallery (King St.).

Memorial Day was declared a USA national holiday in 1971, however, celebrations to honor those who died, who are veterans, and who are currently serving in America’s wars began many moons ago. In 1868, Memorial Day was first widely observed after such proclamation was made under the leadership of General John A. Logan, and soon thereafter, participants decorated the graves of more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers. Click here for flyer.

PORT ROYAL PORTRAIT GALLERY, Town Hall, 419 King St., Port Royal, VA 22535.The guest speaker for our quarterly membership meeting will be Mr. Glen Hyatt, a local collector of WWI items. Mr. Hyatt has also graciously loaned some of his collection for our 2017 WWI & WWI Exhibits, now on display in the Port Royal Museum of American History.

 
APRIL 22, 2017, 11:00AM and 2:00PM, “BOOTH WALKING TOURS”

PORT ROYAL MUSEUM OF MEDICINE, 419 King St., Port Royal, VA 22535

Join Lincoln assassination researchers Dave Taylor and Kate Ramirez as they share the history of the town’s landmarks connected to the escape of assassin, John Wilkes Booth. A leisurely, history filled, one mile walk along the historic streets of Port Royal will end at the Port Royal Museum of American History where Booth related artifacts will be on exhibit and discussed. Light refreshments will be served.

 

TOURS ARE 11:00AM – 12:00PM, AND 2:00PM – 3:00PM. Interested participants should park at the Port Royal Museum of Medicine (419 King St., Port Royal, VA 22535). The entire tour is about one mile of walking and ends with exhibits and discussion of Booth related artifacts at the Port Royal Museum of American History. The suggested donation for the tour is a minimum of $10 per person with all proceeds going to the museums of Historic Port Royal, Inc. Please call Mrs. Davis at 804/7405285 for groups of more than six, otherwise reservations are not required.

Join us for the grand opening of the newly appointed “Virginia Room”. On display are many rare, handmade furnishings, many of which are from the Conway, Buckner and Madison families. Mr. Herbert Collins will be available to answer questions and share the provenance of this magnificent collection. Portraits of Dolly Madison and Thomas Turner (one of Port Royal’s original trustees in 1744) will greet our guests and visitors. Refreshments will be served

Historic Port Royal, Inc.(HPR) offered a docent guided trolley tour of the Town of Port Royal, a progressive holiday dinner, and entertainment at Riverview (c.1846), The Farmer’s home (c.2007), and the Portrait Gallery (in Port Royal Town Hall). The Port Royal Museum of American History celebrated Black History Month with a special African-American exhibit including artifacts collected from around the world. We also dedicated a portrait of J. Shelby Gus to our Portrait Gallery, and recognized some of his many achievements at a celebration with family and friends.

NOVEMBER, 2012 “DEDICATION OF PORT ROYAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN HISTORY”
The Museum opened November, 2012, at 506 Main Street, Port Royal, VA, 22535, (previously Union First Market Bank building). Benefactors of our two largest collections of historical artifacts are Caroline County natives Mr. Herbert Collins of Green Falls Estate, south of Bowling Green, and the Skinner family of Snowden Road, along the Rappahannock River. Many other Caroline families continue gifting and/or loaning items to our new museum for public viewing.
