If you love history, you’ll love Port Royal. Port Royal was once a nexus for international shipping, playing host to a bustling port, merchants, and businesses. Ships sailing up and down the Rappahannock River would stop at Port Royal to unload goods and travelers. With Port Royal becoming a hub of trade came the development of businesses and community. The historic structures that remain today speak to the rich past of this bustling 18th and 19th century port town.
When you visit this treasure on the Rappahannock River, be sure to stop by The Port Royal Museum of American History where we share the history of our Town and community. You can also walk around the heart of the Historic District accompanied by the Virtual Walking Tour. Walking Tour pamphlets are available at the Museum.

The first known church in Port Royal was built here with a stone foundation and brick external walls. It was originally inter-denominational, but by 1844 it was known as the Methodist Church. Many years later the church was abandoned and consequently fell into disrepair. It was demolished in 1977 with only the burial plots remaining.
